Kuih Talam is a traditional double-layered Nyonya kuih. “Talam” means tray in Malay language. The top white layer is made with coconut milk, giving it a soft and slightly salty taste. The bottom green layer is made with pandan and it is sweet and chewy. They combine to make for a delicious dessert.

Instructions

Bottom Layer       

What you need:

  • 500ml  Water
  • 2 tablespoons Pandan juice
  • 1-2 drops         Green colouring
  • 1/2 teaspoon  Alkaline water

Instructions:

  1. Mix premix flour with water and leave aside for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Add pandan juice, green colouring and alkaline water into item 1.
  3. Mix well, filter and cook over low heat until slightly thickened.
  4. Pour batter into 8″ tray and steam over medium heat for 25 minutes.

Top Layer                  

What you need:

  • 250ml  Water
  • 200ml  Coconut milk

Instructions:

  1. Mix premix flour with water and leave aside for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Add coconut milk, mix well and filter.
  3. Cook mixture over low heat until slightly thickened.
  4. Slowly pour mixture over cooked bottom layer.
  5. Steam over medium heat for 15 minutes.

    Made this kuih today and was blown away by how easy it was to make and how delicious it is too!

    I have always been meaning to make this kuih, but it calls for a few types of flour that I don’t usually have in my pantry. So I kept putting it off. But when I saw the premix brand, I decided to give it a try and I was not disappointed at all!
    Can’t wait to try the other mixes that I bought.

    Yummy and always popular at any potluck party. Also vegan and gluten free. It is really convenient to have the premix flour ready which saves a lot of hassle
